Fraudster blunder reveals sensitive information

The credit card details of thousands of British online shoppers were made available online recently, giving anyone using the Google search engine access to the sensitive information.

The details, which included credit card numbers, names and addresses of Visa, Mastercard and American Express card users, was apparently released accidently by cybercriminals from the Far East who were planning to sell the information.

According to the Daily Mail, a spokesperson for banking industry trade body APACS had said most of the details related to expired cards and the remaining cards has been ‘flagged’ by the banks.

This isn’t enough for Conservative MP Nigel Evans, who is also chairman of the All Party Group on Identity Fraud, as he told the Mail: “This is hugely worrying. The credit card companies have a duty of care to inform all those involved that they are at risk of identity fraud.”

A spokesperson for Google has revealed that the information has been removed but did explain that search engines “do not have the ability to remove content directly from the internet.”

This time the battle is over security rather than features

THE good news is that the latest version of Microsoft’s web-browser, Internet Explorer version 8, which was finally released to the public on March 20th, is a vast improvement over its predecessor. The bad news is that it is not an automatic upgrade; you have to download and install it yourself.

That is a strange decision. Internet Explorer has 67% of the browser market precisely because it comes ready-installed as the default browser on nine out of ten personal computers. Usually, one of the first things done by those who care about setting up a Windows computer properly is to replace Internet Explorer with a safer and more flexible browser such as Firefox or Opera. Yet most people leave the Microsoft browser in place and suffer the consequences.

The same goes for Macintosh users. Over the past half a dozen years, the default browser on all Macs has been Apple’s Safari—a nifty program that uses a rendering engine and tools for running Java scripts borrowed from a venerable Linux browser called Konqueror. Certainly Safari, which is used on 8% of computers, is as light and nimble as Konqueror. Unfortunately, though, it offers an open door for cyber-criminals seeking to hijack computers for dastardly deeds. Both Firefox (22% market share) and Opera (less than 1%) are better bets for Macs, though neither is as secure on Apple’s operating system as it is on Windows.

One of the main reasons why a Windows machine is harder to crack than a Mac is because of the way Microsoft randomises the memory locations of code inserted into processes. Even if they can get into the system, hackers then have trouble finding where their nefarious bit of code is lurking. And if they cannot find the malicious code, they cannot get it to do its dirty work.

Apple is not big on randomisation, which is part of the reason why Macintosh computers are so vulnerable to online attack, whether running Safari or even Firefox. Hackers agree the toughest nut to crack is Firefox running on Windows.

The reason why Macs do not suffer as much as Windows machines from break-ins and hijackings is because there are just not enough of them around to make it worthwhile for “black hat” programmers in the underworld to write software to exploit them for criminal purposes. Equally, there is nowhere near enough reward money to encourage “white hat” programmers in the security field to find ways of exploiting bugs in Apple’s operating system and its Safari browser.

Such vulnerabilities have a market value. In the Apple world, confidential tips about identifying bugs fetch around $5,000 apiece compared with $50,000 or more in the Windows realm. Lots of security firms make a living from selling information to Microsoft and software firms that produce applications for Windows.

That does not mean Macintosh computers are impervious to attack. In fact, Macs running Safari, even with all the latest security patches, are among the easiest to crack. For the second year running, a team led by Charlie Miller of Independent Security Evaluators won a $10,000 prize at the CanSecWest security conference in Vancouver held between March 16th and 20th, with a “drive-by” attack on a MacBook Air. With judges watching every keystroke, it took him only seconds to break remotely into the fully patched Macintosh laptop running Safari and take control of it. How? Mr Miller would not say. That secret is strictly for Apple’s eyes only.

Even so, cracking Safari on a Mac is becoming a bit of a party trick. Another security researcher at the Vancouver meeting cracked both Safari and Firefox on a Mac as bonus while doing something seriously tricky. The researcher in question, known only by his first name, Nils, broke into a Sony Vaio laptop running Internet Explorer 8 on Vista’s heavily fortified replacement, Windows 7. For compromising all three browsers—Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari—Nils walked away with $5,000 in prize money.

The only browser left standing was Google’s one-year-old Chrome. The consensus was that even the lightning-fast Chrome would have been toppled if Google made a habit of buying information about bugs—thereby giving researchers an incentive to develop exploits.

At the moment, Google doesn’t. Because it has such a minuscule slice of the market (1.2%), hackers have not bothered to attack Chrome. The same goes for Opera, which many professionals rate as the best browser around. The reason why Opera has not secured a bigger share of the market is probably because, although it is free, it is not a piece of “open-source” software like Firefox. As such, it lacks the fanatical support of the open-source movement.

Apart from having a small share of the market, what makes Chrome seemingly so robust? Although they drew on the same Linux tool box as Apple did for Safari, Google’s engineers broke with the traditional architecture adopted by all web browsers. Instead of using a monolithic structure that combines both the user and the web together in a single protected area, Chrome ingeniously separates the main part of the program, the browser kernel, from the various rendering processes that recreate web pages on a computer screen. The browser kernel, which interacts directly with the operating system, is therefore shielded from anything questionable lurking on the web.

Meanwhile, the rendering engine resides in a “sandbox” that strictly controls what resources can be read or written to. Like a virtual machine, a sandbox creates an artificial environment within the computer that mimics elements of the machine it is running on—and thus prevents guest programs from taking charge of the actual computer.

That, at least, is the theory. In practice, Trojan horses and other nasty bits of malware can leak across from the sandbox to a supposedly protected computer. That is because the operating system needs various browser plug-ins, such as JavaScript and ActiveX controls, to run the web program. It remains to be seen whether Chrome will survive in the real world as well as it did at the Vancouver meeting, especially if it gains in popularity.

Come what may, computer users are going to need browsers that are a good deal more secure than they are today. As computer applications move from the desktop to the web (”cloud” in modern geek-speak), more of people’s personal and professional lives will be filtered through their browsers. Keeping such information secure is becoming essential.

Google Lays Off 200 More, But Still Surprisingly Selective

By now, it’s apparent even Google is no longer unaffected by the economy, and now the company has announced further cuts in its staff—the third reduction this year.

In a blog post today, Omid Kordestani, Google’s senior vice president for global sales and business development, said the search giant had simply hired more people than it needed for the current level of business. So 200 jobs in sales and marketing will be cut, though some of the people will be able to apply for jobs that Google is still hiring for.

Clearly, Google has seen its business hurt by the economy more than it expected even in January, when CEO Eric Schmidt said deeper cuts were unlikely. It seems likely that whatever revenue growth Google achieves in its first quarter, which it will report on April 16, it won’t be as much as the company thought a short time ago. According to many advertisers and search experts, January and February saw fewer searches and less search spending, though March may be showing some improvement.

What’s more, the cuts come in a particular challenging area for Google. It has been trying to persuade Madison Avenue ad agencies and big brand advertisers that it can offer them more kinds of ads beyond search, from pictorial display ads to TV ads. Those efforts remain nascent. The layoffs also follow the departure of North American ad sales executive Tim Armstrong, who is leaving to become CEO of Time Warner’s AOL unit.

At the same time, although this is the largest layoff this year, it still strikes me as remarkably small given Google’s 20,000-person staff and the severity of the recession—even with the earlier layoffs of 100 recruiters in January and 40 people after Google closed its radio ads business in February. Although more could come especially if the economy continues to worsen, these appear to be rather selective at a time when nearly every company seems to consider a 10% to 20% layoff mandatory. That indicates that while Google’s business certainly has been hit by the downturn, it’s not doing as badly as most businesses.

At least one search expert thinks Google won’t much miss the lost sales people. “Google’s core product sells itself,” Kevin Lee, CEO of the search marketing firm Didit, emailed me today. “Most savvy marketers would spend the same, with or without a sales rep. Reps are important, but mostly to educate on new products. Some of that is handled better via PR or webinars.”

The layoffs bear the mark of relatively new Chief Financial Officer Patrick Pichette, who was hired last fall. Google people have been telling me Pichette has imposed a new discipline on Google’s spending. “Patrick has helped us uncover opportunities” to cut operations that weren’t performing, such as Google’s Lively virtual world, which was jettisoned recently, Bradley Horowitz, VP of product for Google Apps, told me. Dave Girouard, president of Google’s corporate enterprise efforts, says Pichette “digs very deep” in asking questions about which ads are working for which advertiser.

When All Search Is Local

For some businesses, all search is local search. This includes service businesses that work within a defined geographic area, brick-and-mortar businesses that exist in only one location, and those that have several different branches.

For these enterprises, location is everything and local search is the only search that matters. Their target market is potential buyers of goods or services who could walk into their place of business. It makes no sense to expend resources advertising to anyone else. For these business owners, narrowing their marketing is one of the best ways to a get good ROI (define).

So how do you do it? By combining your Web site optimization for universal search with the optimization of your Web site and local business profiles to rank in Google, the Google 10 pack, and Google Maps, and in Yahoo, the Yahoo 3 pack, and Yahoo Local.

Without a doubt, more people use Google search to find what they’re looking for on the Internet than any other tool. Even people looking for the phone number of the dry cleaner around the corner or the hours of their neighborhood swimming pool are more likely to begin their online quest for information in the Google search box than anywhere else.

Therefore, you need to rank well in the universal SERPs (define). Do this by optimizing your Web site for Google for your best keyword phrase plus your location. Don’t just optimize for “dentist” or “children’s dentist,” but for “Littleton Colorado dentist” or “Aurora children’s dentist.” Use all of your regular optimization techniques, but do it with a geographic slant. That includes titles, descriptions, header tags, and content.

Links are another important aspect of a Web site that help to convey local relevance to both the search engines and potential customers. That includes internal link text and the text of the external links that point to its pages. We’re fairly confident that when we click on a link that says “Lakewood orthodontist,” we’ll be taken to a page about a dentist practicing in a western suburb of Denver who specializes in braces.

The same techniques that help you to rank well in Google will usually also get you a decent ranking in Yahoo.

While MSN Live Local is a distant third among local search engines in numbers of users, Yahoo Local is an important player in Local Search because many other Yahoo verticals, like Yahoo Travel, draw heavily from it as a source of trusted information. In addition, Google considers Yahoo Local an authoritative site. It frequently displays Yahoo Local listings in its search results and reviews from Yahoo Local often appear on Google Maps Local Business Listing pages.

Optimization for a local search engine depends greatly on its trust in the information it has about a business. So, it’s critical to claim your listings in Google Maps and Yahoo Local and standardize your data across the Web as much as possible.

It also makes an impact when you optimize your business profiles by enhancing them as much as is allowed by adding information, photos, videos, and coupons; placing your listing in the proper categories and in as many relevant categories as you can; and in Google Maps by giving your listing attributes.

When Google interprets local intent in a search query, it often displays 10 local results beneath the paid ads at the top of the page and above the first organic listing. Sometimes, as in the example below, the 10 pack is shown first on the page. In the Yahoo search results, only three local listings are shown.

Ranking in the Local 10 or 3 Pack is enviable, as those listings enjoy a privileged position on the page, catch the searcher’s eye, and prominently show the businesses’ phone numbers. The key to ranking well in these listings is to rank well in both the local search engine and in the universal search engine, either Google and Google Maps or Yahoo and Yahoo Local. So, concentrate your efforts on optimizing for those algorithms and the positive results will show up here.

When all search is local, you need to combine universal search, local search, and the local 10 pack and 3 pack to make certain your business appears where most of your potential customers can find it.

Google updates its algorithm to reward comprehensive content

Internet giant Google has released an update to its search algorithm that it says will deliver more accurate results and reward sites that rely on comprehensive content.

Google says the changes will help users “better understand associations and concepts related to your search, and therefore…deliver a more meaningful search experience”.

The new algorithm makes search results more relevant by using the wording from the original search, plus any related search topics.

“When you enter a longer query, with more than three words, regular-length snippets may not give you enough information and context,” a company blog post says.

“In these situations, we now increase the number of lines in the snippet to provide more information and show more of the words you typed in the context of the page.”

The changes mean that if a user searches for a topic such as “principles of physics”, then the related topics offered will include “theory of relatively” and “the big bang”.

Jim Stewart, director of SEO consulting group Stewartmedia.biz, says that the new algorithm will also reward businesses that have comprehensive content on their websites.

“Rather than being a dumb search engine and search for words, it’s going to reward sites that have more information about a particular topic,” he says.

“If someone Googles ‘climate change’ and a long question about it, the science that will rank higher and have more exposure will be the ones that talk more about the related information around climate change, such as Kyoto protocol, the emissions trading scheme, and so on,” Stewart says.

“The algorithm is based on how phrases relate to each other rather than the words themselves, and businesses that have more content will rank higher in results.”

The changes to the company’s search technology also have an Australian flavour, after a PhD student from the University of New South Wales developed the programming behind the new developments.

The changes are based on “Orion” technology, developed by Ori Allan in 2006, before Google acquired the technology and hired Allan to work at its California headquarters.

Mozilla Contemplates a Future Without Google

How much longer this pairing can last has been called into question since Google introduced its own Web browser, Chrome. The simplest option would be for Mozilla to sell Firefox’s default search space to someone else. Firefox’s valuable real estate would likely fetch a premium from any contender seeking a quick way to gain ground.

From the head offices for Mozilla in Mountain View, Calif., executives can see Google in several directions. The search giant’s sprawling Googleplex buildings dominate the landscape. “We are physically surrounded by Google,” says Mitchell Baker, who became chair of the Mozilla Foundation after stepping down from its chief executive post last year.

Google also shows up all over the balance sheet of Mozilla, creator of the Firefox browser and other software. Under an agreement between the two, Google’s search engine enjoys a default position on the toolbar of Firefox, the second-most-used Web browser after Microsoft Relevant Products/Services’s Internet Explorer.

To date, the arrangement has proved mutually beneficial. Google accounts for more than 88 percent of Mozilla’s revenue, which totaled $75 million in 2007. And as Mozilla wins over users of Internet Explorer, it helps Google grab share in the lucrative Web search market. Firefox has about 22 percent of the browser market, making it by far the strongest competitor to Internet Explorer, which maintains a 67 percent share, according to Net Applications.

“Firefox Needs Google More”

How much longer this pairing can last has been called into question since September, when Google introduced its own Web browser, Chrome. The prospect that Google may not re-up the three-year contract set to expire in 2011 has Mozilla considering other search partnerships and ways to generate revenue, Baker said during a recent visit to BusinessWeek’s offices in New York. “They could breach the contract or they could decide not to renew,” Baker says. While she says she doesn’t expect Google to take either approach, she’s nonetheless considering alternatives.

Smart move, analysts say. “Firefox needs Google more than Google needs Firefox, and that situation will only become more pronounced” as Chrome gains new users, says Ray Valdes, research director at Gartner.

The simplest alternative would be for Mozilla to sell Firefox’s default search space to someone else. “There are probably other search engines that would pay us more money,” Baker says. Yahoo! and Microsoft’s MSN, Google’s two main search rivals, come to mind, but Baker says smaller search engines wouldn’t be discounted should such a situation arise. Firefox’s valuable real estate would likely fetch a premium from any contender seeking a quick way to gain ground on Google. One player Baker won’t identify “offered a blank check to replace Google,” she says. She notes it wasn’t Microsoft.

Monetizing the Browser

Losing Google would carry risks. “It’s possible that Firefox’s adoption rate could decline if Firefox users felt they were getting Microsoft or Yahoo shoved down their throat,” says John Battelle, an Internet entrepreneur, author, and operator of John Battelle’s Searchblog.

Baker notes that although Firefox has a default search box, the browser lets users choose the search engine they’d like to see in the toolbar.

Search partners are just one of several options for Mozilla to generate revenue in the future, Baker adds. “It’s not hard to monetize the browser,” she says. “There have been more opportunities for money than people think.” She’s mum on what these may be, but two of Mozilla’s coming projects may offer clues.

Set to launch on certain Nokia phones in late spring, Fennec is the first Mozilla browser optimized for mobile platforms. If it gains traction with enough handset makers and mobile users, Fennec could represent another way to draw revenue from a partnering search engine. Of course, Google’s Chrome has a head start in mobile search: The mobile browser began shipping on T-Mobile handsets in October.

Plug-Ins Could Be Lucrative

Currently in beta testing, Weave is an online service Mozilla designed to help users synchronize their personal information, passwords, and browsing history as they move from one device to the next — as well as provide greater control over how Web sites such as social networks can collect the data and share it with others. Weave will be free to users and Baker says Mozilla won’t field a more robust, paid version.

Finally, Mozilla could attempt to profit from the growing use of third-party applications known as plug-ins, which are made available to users who download Web browsers. For example, someone who downloads Firefox might be prompted with a list of featured widgets that can be added to the browser. “There are a lot of companies willing to pay money to get their various wares promoted and distributed,” Battelle says. “That economy is real.” Baker says Mozilla will “resist” relying on plug-ins, noting that users tend not to like “buttons.”

To be sure, Baker believes the most likely future for Mozilla is a continued partnership with Google. She believes that by ending its deal with Firefox, the search giant would cut itself off from the only viable challenger to Microsoft’s browser for the foreseeable future. After all, Chrome only recently passed 1 percent in share of browser use. “That’s a terrible setting for Google to operate in,” says Baker. “It’s a setting for a lot of risk.”

Google also pledges loyalty to the partnership. “Obviously we are now in the browser space but we remain great supporters of Firefox,” says Google spokesman Eitan Bencuya. “It was Mozilla that kicked off most of the innovation we have seen in browsers over the last few years.”

US software giant Google said it had removed several images from its Street View software, which allows web surfers to view parts of 25 British cities, after users raised privacy concerns.

Street View displays 360-degree ground-level images captured by roaming cars using digital photography equipment.

The cars began taking images last summer, and continue to capture images across the country, allowing the service to expand after its launch here on Thursday.

Just 24 hours after its release in Britain, however, Google said it had removed several pictures, including ones that users found embarrassing, such as one of a man leaving a sex shop in central London’s Soho neighbourhood, or another one of a man vomiting outside a pub in the east of the British capital.

A spokeswoman for the American Internet company declined to confirm the precise number of photos that were removed, but said it had been “less than expected”.

Individual internet users who do not want either their image or that of their home to be used in Street View can request it be taken off Google’s database by filling out an online form.

Google says it has developed sophisticated software that ensures that individual’s faces and vehicle license plates are blurred.

After initially being launched in the United States in May 2007, Street View is now available in Britain, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, France, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands.

Google has launched its controversial Street View mapping service in the UK, with web and mobile phone users able to see 360-degree views of 25 cities from Southampton to Edinburgh.

The company has spent almost a year collecting images, with a fleet of specially modified cars crawling along thousands of miles of British roads.

The company’s biggest challenge has been the British weather, with the cars’ cameras rendered useless by rain and snow. Drivers had hoped last summer would provide the ideal conditions of dry and slightly overcast skies, but it turned out to be one of the wettest on record.

Away from the logistical challenges, Street View has also suffered intense criticism from privacy campaigners since it launched in the US two years ago. An American couple even went as far as to sue Google over invasion of privacy. They lost the case.

The Daily Mail has been particularly vociferous in its attack on Google, branding it a “burglar’s charter”.

To try to meet concerns about privacy, Street View only contains imagery that is already visible from public roads and features technology that blurs both faces and licence plates.

In addition, any user can easily flag images for removal by clicking on “Report a concern”.

Last year the Information Commissioner’s Office, which had been investigating complaints about Street View, cleared the service for launch in the UK.

“Although it is possible that in certain limited circumstances an image may allow identification of an individual, it is clear that Google is keen to capture images of streets and not individuals,” the watchdog said.

Street View launched in the US in May 2007 and is already available in Japan, Australia, New Zealand, France, Spain and Italy.

Hidden within the Street View imagery in the UK will be well-known children’s story book character ‘Wally’ wearing his trademark blue trousers, red and white striped hat and jumper and walking stick.

Sony e-book reader gets 500,000 books from Google

Google’s vast trove of scanned public-domain books vaults the Sony Reader past Amazon.com Inc.’s Kindle as the device with the largest available library, at about 600,000 books.

New York: Google Inc. is making half a million books, unprotected by copyright, available for free on Sony Corp.’s electronic book-reading device, the companies were set to announce Thursday.

It’s the first time Google has made its vast trove of scanned public-domain books available to an e-book device, and vaults the Sony Reader past Amazon.com Inc.’s Kindle as the device with the largest available library, at about 600,000 books.

The scanned books were all published before 1923, and include works like Charles Dickens’ “A Tale of Two Cities” as well as nonfiction classics like Herodotus’ “The Histories.”

The books are already available as free downloads in the Portable Document Format (PDF), which works well on computer screens but not on e-book readers. Google will provide the books to the Sony Reader in the EPUB (electronic publication) format, which lets the lines flow differently to fit a smaller screen.

Google spokeswoman Jennie Johnson said the company wants to make the books available as widely as possible.

“Really our vision is: any book, anywhere, any time and on any device,” she said. “We want to partner with anybody who shares our vision of making them more accessible.”

The publishing industry has more or less united on EPUB for e-book distribution, but Amazon uses its own format for the Kindle. However, unencrypted EPUB files can be converted to a format readable by the Kindle using PC software.

Unlike the Sony Reader, the $359 Kindle has a wireless connection directly to its e-book store, which boasts more than 245,000 titles. To get books onto the Reader, the user first downloads them from Sony’s Web site using a computer, then connects the Reader to the computer.

There are two models of the Reader, priced at $300 and $350.

Google Chrome for Linux On Its Way: Take It for a Spin

IconIn addition to the Chrome 2.0 beta, work for the Linux version of Chrome is on its way. Its official name is currently “Chromium,” and Google Chrome for Linux doesn’t officially exist yet. For the sake of argument, however, Google Chrome for Linux is on its way whether it’s currently in a Chromium and pre-alpha state or not, and now Ubuntu users can get a hold of Chromium to take for a spin. In this article, learn how to install the current build of Chromium to test on your Ubuntu or Ubuntu-based system and see several screenshots of the budding browser.

According to Lee Matthews at Download Squad, Chromium runs just as fast on Ubuntu as the current Windows version of Chrome does. Its only drawbacks are that there are several features, including tabs and bookmarks bars, that currently aren’t functional. Even still, excited young Linux buffs who also have a love of Chrome will give their eyeteeth to get Chromium. Thankfully eyeteeth aren’t required. All that must be done is the following, as instructed by Matthews:
